What is Mobile RWIS?

Mobile Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) are advanced tools for road maintenance fleets that allow the recording and analysis of road conditions as part of an Intelligent Transportation System.

Utilizing sensors installed directly on fleet vehicles (such as snowplows), Mobile RWIS systems measure road conditions at incredibly fast intervals, providing a clear, accurate picture of road conditions not possible through stationary roadside RWIS stations.

Integration into Titan GPS offers road maintenance and Smart City operators a wealth of robust data for supporting decision-making, increasing efficiencies, and implementing cost-saving measures across an entire fleet.

Uses of Mobile RWIS Data

Winter roads are unpredictable – a dry road can turn to an icy stretch, back to dry, then to snow covered over a short distance. Static-positioned RWIS stations provide some insight into road conditions, but they only scratch the surface.

With Mobile RWIS systems equipped on fleet vehicles, making roads safer for travelers becomes a dynamic process. The data integrated into the Titan GPS dashboard allows fleet operators to ensure the most troublesome areas get the adequate attention needed, and safer stretches of road aren’t overdone, making for a more efficient operation.

Third Party Data Integration

Titan GPS supports the use of REST API for integration of Mobile RWIS data. When installed on any vehicle, data collected through a Mobile RWIS system can be externally shared with other third party solutions.

Vehicles equipped with either of the supported sensor systems can be used as patrol vehicles that collect the road data, which can be accessed and integrated with third party solutions either in real-time or historically. This method of data collection can stand alone or be used to supplement static RWIS systems, providing valuable insight that may be factor into a variety of process and decisions.

Titan GPS is compatible with two common Mobile RWIS systems, the Lufft MARWIS* and Vaisala MD30*.
