A New Dimension of Vehicle Diagnostic Data

 

Titan GPS is pleased to announce the addition of a new diagnostic tool to our extensive list of features. Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data is now available with select Titan GPS fleet tracking devices and plans, giving fleet managers an increased level of insight into the status of light duty vehicles.

What is Vehicle Diagnostic Data?

Standard Data

Every light duty vehicle (on-road cars and trucks weighing less than 8,500 lbs) manufactured since 1996 is legally required to have an On-board diagnostic port, colloquially known as OBDII or OBD2. The OBDII port is essentially a built in computer used to monitor emissions systems and other vehicle data. OBDII ports connect to a vehicle’s check engine light, which alerts drivers if a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) has been registered by the on-board computer. While the check engine light does not indicate what the potential issue is, it points to an issue that may need to be remedied by a mechanic.

In the event a check engine light does come on, mechanics and technicians use the OBDII port as an access point to plug in a device called a code reader or code scanner – enabling them to extract data about any potential issues or DTCs. The data, called Parameter IDs (PIDs), are vehicle diagnostic codes that provide insight into the status of specific vehicle systems.

The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) requires all manufacturers to support a subset of standard PIDs so that key data are available to anybody with a code reader. Standard PIDs are mostly related to emissions, but do provide some other insight into vehicle status as well.

All Titan GPS devices that utilize an OBDII port can read standard PIDs and display the data on the software dashboard to alert users that a DTC has been detected in a fleet asset.

Advanced Data

Since SAE began mandating standard PIDs, manufacturers worldwide have been defining unique, proprietary codes that provide additional layers of data specific to each year, make, and model. While this data could prove quite valuable to a fleet manager, proprietary PID data is not commonly available, limiting the amount of useable information a device connected to an OBDII port can retrieve.

Titan GPS’ new Advanced Vehicle Diagnostic Data feature takes PID data a step further, granting users access to the proprietary data usually hidden from standard OBDII-connected devices. We have partnered with a third-party server that grants access to PID codes directly from the manufacturer, ensuring all the data collected is legitimate and accurate.

The proprietary PID data now accessible through Titan GPS systems opens the door to new opportunities for fleet managers, far above and beyond simply seeing what caused a check engine light to come on.

Titan GPS’ new feature won’t just assist fleet managers with maintenance tracking and scheduling, it will provide additional layers of safety for drivers and meaningful insight into fleet status.

Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data supports real-time safety alerts that provide users with more insight than ever before. Select Titan GPS devices can now send alerts for safety features such as airbag and seatbelt status, allowing users to remotely detect if a vehicle has been involved in an accident, or if a driver has removed their seatbelt while in motion.

By utilizing manufacturer-specific PID data, the Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data feature also provides enhanced insight into vehicle maintenance benchmarks. The feature works in conjunction with Titan GPS’ popular maintenance scheduling feature to provide more accurate odometer readings taken directly from a vehicle’s on-board computer, along with oil life %, and current tire pressures.

In addition to the safety benefits and maintenance insights provided through Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data, fleet managers may also use the data to identify and track certain driver behaviours. With the gear position indicator available through the new feature, users can ensure that drivers are adhering to job- and site-specific rules. For instance, some industries and job sites may enforce a back-in policy, requiring passenger vehicles to face a specific direction when parked, like the exit of an oil & gas lease site. It is also common for job sites to suggest “forward first,” meaning that a vehicle’s first motion after starting should not be in reverse. With the ability to monitor current gear position, fleet managers can add another degree of driver accountability and ensure their fleet is respecting client policies.

The final metric that is available through Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data is remaining fuel level. When combined with Titan GPS’ fleet management system, users have more insight into fuel usage statistics than ever before.

Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data for Your Fleet

This advancement in status monitoring and diagnostics is compatible with select Titan GPS fleet monitoring devices (TT6000 [with diagnostic cable], TT2001, and TT2020 devices). PID support varies between vehicle year, make, and model. While many vehicles will benefit from the full suite of Advanced Light Duty Diagnostic Data features, full PID integration may not be available on all vehicles.
